Embracing Stillness
January offers us a time to reset for the year ahead. The first weeks of the year should feel like a deep breath of cold winter air. It’s a moment to pause, gather ourselves, and reset our priorities. For Snow Peak, nature is where we turn for rejuvenation. In winter, we lean into the quiet rhythm of the season, taking inspiration from the ways flora and fauna remain dormant as they gather energy for spring. It’s a season of stillness.
As always, camping offers a bridge into nature, allowing us to observe its peace and beauty. While winter camping may not seem synonymous with rest, with the right set up, it can be a truly restorative and cozy experience. Read our recommendations for a peaceful winter escape.
Shelter Selections
Simply put, the shelter you choose will make or break your trip. Winter tents and tarps are essential for a warm night’s sleep or protected campfire gathering. Try an expansive shelter for an integrated living and sleeping space or set up a classic tent/tarp combo for a separate gathering area. We’ve included a few suggestions below – but be sure your shelter is classified for three or four-season use.
Takibi Tarp Hexa Set or Takibi Octa Tarp: Our fire-resistant tarps truly shine during the cold season. Whatever cold mix is coming down from the sky, you can stay cozy and dry next to the fire under the reliable shelter of the Takibi Tarp. Pair with a tent or shelter of choice to complete your campsite.
Land Lock or Living Shell: Shelters are best for the winter’s unpredictable weather. That said, your go-to options like the Alpha Breeze or Amenity Dome can work well – but we would recommend investing in the Mat & Sheet Set and using a cot to stay off the chilly ground.
A few tips for snowy days: Don’t forget to tamp down the snow for an even, flat surface! Remember that positioning is extra important during the winter – avoid trees with heavy, snowy branches and try to find a spot in the direct sun.
Layer Up
Insulated outerwear and warm base layers are crucial for an enjoyable winter camping trip. Select garments that are comfortable and easy to layer. Fleece, down and items from our Flexible Insulated line are optimal fabrics. Protect yourself from the elements with waterproof outerwear and banish spark holes with our fire-resistant Takibi Line. Don’t forget to pack a blanket or two for staying cozy by the fire. The NanoLoft Takibi Blanket is an ideal addition to any snow excursion.
Get Cozy by the Fire
Listen to the rain fall from the sheltered warmth of your Takibi Tarp, next to a stack of crackling logs. Be sure to bring ample firewood to keep your Takibi Fire & Grill lit throughout the day. Use the Folding Torch to dry off any damp wood. Experiment with campfire cooking right over the coals using durable cast iron.
Plan Hearty Meals
What better way to warm up than a filling stew or chili? Winter camping is the optimal time to source hearty meals that will keep you full and happy all day long. We also recommend packing ingredients for hot beverages such as hot cocoa, tea, apple cider, or coffee. Add your preferred liquor for a bit of extra warmth.
Set the Cozy Vibe
The campsite is set up, your campfire is burning and the soup is simmering – complete the scene with soft lighting from the Mini Hozuki or Mini Flame. As the sun begins to set, take in the peaceful sounds of nature while illuminated by the warm glow of your chosen lantern.
Winter camping may not be everyone’s first thought when it comes to reconnecting with nature, but integrating some outdoor living into your life in the colder season offers a chance to slow down and embrace the stillness. With the right gear and an openness to new experiences, you can discover the quiet magic of winter.
