Origin Story: Land Lock
Since the 1980s, Snow Peak has pioneered a style of camping that prioritizes comfort, relaxation, and moments of connection. Campers build campsites that mimic the home, using thoughtfully designed gear. This approach offers a new standard for outdoor enjoyment centered on rest and rejuvenation. The Land Lock shelter exists as the pinnacle of comfort within Snow Peak’s line.
What is the Land Lock?
The Land Lock is one of the largest tents in Snow Peak's catalog and enjoys overwhelming popularity among family and group campers. Its imposing square silhouette was conceptualized for a large space that supports a growing family. It can comfortably accommodate two adults and three children.
Spending time in nature means encountering unexpected weather like heavy rain or strong winds. The Land Lock offers an integrated living room and bedroom, ensuring comfort even during sudden weather changes. The shelter’s one-piece design reduces set-up complexity and can easily be constructed by two campers.

Design History
First released in 2009, the Land Lock was designed to meet the needs of families looking for spacious and comfortable tents. The two-room shelter combined the functionality of tents and shelters, offering a larger living space for groups and families.
Initially modeled after the Living Shell, the Land Lock’s integrated design significantly reduces setup time and allows all parts of the camping experience to occur in the shelter. While children are napping, adults can relax in the living space, allowing families to cherish their time together.

Family Size
At nearly six meters in length, the Land Lock is one of Snow Peak’s largest shelters. Its size was by design - the spacious interior comfortably houses the gear required for young families. In Japan, most campsites are roughly square, and the shelter’s rectangular shape allowed it to be set up next to a passenger car. The square entry points allow parents to come and go while holding a child.
The interior of the shelter easily accommodates a four-person table. Without the detachable inner tent, the Land Lock becomes an extra-large shelter that can accommodate a large number of campers. The square shape of the inner room makes movement easy, and the shelter’s ample height allows adults to stand without feeling cramped.

Wind Resistance
Given the size of the Land Lock, wind was a concern for Snow Peak’s product designers. They developed a new framework to support the shelter’s size while ensuring excellent wind resistance. Multiple prototypes were tested to determine the areas with wind-induced stress, determining that the ceiling had the most concentrated force. Typically, shelters use a curved ridge pole, but due to the Land Lock’s size, the designers reduced the curvature of the ridge pole to increase strength. Additionally, an A-frame pole attaches to the ridge pole, which absorbs wind resistance from the front of the shelter, while the C-frame and center frame provide support against wind from the sides. This pole structure not only ensured lasting durability but also maintained a straightforward setup process that was attainable for campers.
While the Land Lock has undergone minor design improvements since its initial release, its frame and core structure have been unchanged. It remains a premium part of Snow Peak’s product line, offering an expansive space designed for comfortable outdoor living.
