Controller

PURPOSE

The Controller directs the Accounting Department including the team, tools, systems and processes. This position digs in and makes the numbers tell a valuable story, leads special projects, and contributes to ongoing departmental obligations. To be successful, the Controller will serve as a leader and mentor with strong tech skills, a superior understanding of financial statement preparation and analysis, and an ability to coordinate the myriad of accounting operations.

  • FSLA: Exempt
  • Status: Full Time, Benefit Eligible
  • Compensation: 80-90k / Annual, DOE
  • Reports To: Chief Financial Officer
  • Schedule: Regular Office Hours

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Manage Department Responsibilities

  • Oversee the production of periodic financial reports; ensure results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards
  • Oversee the operations of the Accounting Department; accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll
  • Produce the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management
  • Provide financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
  • Work with external auditors for the annual audit
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements
  • Recommend benchmarks to measure the company's performance
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implement a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk
  • Own administration of financial management system users, settings, and trainings

Supervise Team

  • Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit, select, and hire an appropriate team
  • Enable employees to meet Snow Peak’s expectations for goal accomplishment by overseeing onboarding, training, and continuous improvement 
  • Monitor employee work schedules including assignments, training, paid time off, and overtime
  • Develop employee career pathing by coaching, mentoring, and providing effective performance feedback; inspire a culture of learning and development
  • Communicate transparently and resolve conflicts to foster a successful team that encourages the appreciation of diverse perspectives as well as cohesiveness

Lead Department Strategy

  • Plan and implement strategic objectives that fulfill the mission and the goals of the department efficiently and effectively in collaboration with leadership team
  • Evaluate, improve, and report the efficiency of business processes and procedures to enhance profitability and qualitative results
  • Establish, maintain, and present reports to stakeholders
  • Engage in effective feedback systems to monitor and communicate operational and strategic alignment with interdepartmental objectives
  • Manage departmental budget and profitability metrics

MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor's in Accounting
  • Seven years or more of related experience required.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Proficient presentation and public speaking
  • Proficient knowledge of accounting systems (SAP, Sage)
  • Proficient understanding of Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Proficient knowledge of compliance related laws and regulations
  • Proficient understanding of project management fundamentals
  • Excellent leadership and management skills with ability to motivate
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Advanced writing and documentation experience with demonstrated success in strategic messaging
  • Advanced expertise in excel and analytical reporting
  • Expert understanding of the financial and business acumen to drive profitability
  • A creative mind with an ability to take initiative and be resourceful

    NICE TO HAVE

    • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation
    • Experience with SAP, Sage accounting systems
    • Experience in the outdoor, retail, or apparel industries

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
    • Communicate effectively with a diverse audience in person, by phone and by computer
